ASAF Fellowship Research Award
The purpose of the American Surgical Association Foundation Fellowship is to support and encourage gifted young surgeons who choose careers in investigation and academic surgery. Fellows will be supported in an initial year; the Fellowship can be renewed by review of the Fellowship Committee for a succeeding year. During the Fellowship years, the Awardee should have a primary role in research and teaching. It is expected that the Fellow will have a faculty position following the Fellowship in the Department of Surgery of the sponsoring institution.
Qualifications
An applicant for an American Surgical Association Foundation Fellowship must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States of America or Canada and have an M.D. or equivalent medical degree. The applicant must have completed an ACGME approved residency in general surgery or a surgical specialty and hold a faculty appointment in an accredited medical school or a similar medical institution. The application for the Fellowship must be submitted within five years from the time that the applicant has completed their residency. Primary consideration will be given to applicants who have previously had relevant research experience. All candidates must have completed an NIH certified course in Research Ethics or plan to do so within the first year of the Fellowship award. The American Surgical Association Foundation Fellowship is a career development award and is meant to support young investigators who have not been funded by the National Institutes of Health. Acceptance of other career development or fellowship awards such as the NIH K08 Career Development Award or the American Cancer Society Mentored Research Scholar Grant precludes application for the American Surgical Association Foundation Fellowship.
Application
The application should be completed by the applicant, the sponsor and the department chairman. All sections of the application should be typed in the space allowed. The original application and one copy should be forwarded to the American Surgical Association Foundation. An institutional statement on welfare of animals and protection of human subjects must be attested by an appropriate officer of the applicant's institution. Download the application to apply.
Deadline
Applications must be received in the American Surgical Association Foundation's Administrative Offices no later than June 15. They should be sent to:
Secretary
American Surgical Association Foundation
900 Cummings Center, Suite 221-U
Beverly, MA 01915
Sponsor and Department Chairman
Sponsorship of the application may be by the primary advisor or the department chairman. The department chairman and the sponsor are responsible for guiding the Awardee's academic career both during the Fellowship and afterwards. The department chairman is responsible for assuring the Awardee's academic rank, being sure that the Awardee has appropriate research facilities and academic arrangements during the fellowship and afterwards. Both the sponsor and the department chairman should be familiar with the applicant's planned area of research and academic plans. They should indicate that the applicant's surgical department and institution will provide appropriate academic appointment for the Awardee on completion of the Fellowship.
Personal Interviews
A personal interview may be requested by the Fellowship Review Committee. If an interview is requested, the candidate will be notified. Interviews will be held during the meeting of the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress in October.
Fellowship Compensation
The Fellowship Award is $75,000 per year. No indirect costs will be paid. The Awardee is not precluded from receiving additional compensation from the sponsoring institution resulting in a total salary consistent with the Awardee's rank, accomplishments, and years of service.
Time of Initiation of Award
The decision regarding the awarding of the Fellowship will be announced prior to November 1. Funding of the award to the Fellow will begin July 1.
Expectations of Awardee
The awardee will be expected to present a written and oral report to the Association at its Annual Meeting. It is expected, but not required that research from the Fellowship will be submitted for consideration for the ASA Program annually. In addition, a written update of research progress will be expected at the Mid Winter Council Meeting of the Association.
